JSaraske's PGP Newsletter #4

[Note: The following text was originally sent as e-mail to a small mailing list on 2/11/2000. The text is reproduced here verbatim. The only revision is wrapping it in HTML to turn it into a web page, and the inclusion of this note.]

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to let you know that PGP 6.5.1ckt (Build 05) is available for Windows 95/98 in executable form. (Previously only source code was available.) You can get it from Imad's PGP Page at http://irfaiad.virtualave.net/. Note that the executable is NOT listed on the main page or the News page. However, it is available on the Quick Download Combo Box near the bottom of the main page. Click the down arrow and select "PGP 6.5.1ckt - Build 05"; do NOT choose "PGP 6.5.1ckt - Build 05 - Source Code" (unless you want to dig into the PGP source code and compile it yourself).

If you are just getting started with PGP, I recommend that you use "PGP 6.5.1i" instead of "PGP 6.5.1ckt". It is available from the same Quick Download list as the CKT version. CKT versions of PGP are intended for advanced users. CKT versions allow a wider range of configuration options, and some of these can cause problems if you don't know what you are doing. If you don't know *why* you need a CKT version, then you *don't* need it. If you need help getting started with PGP, check out my tutorial page at https://members.tripod.com/~jsaraske/PGP_Intro.htm.

The .zip file for PGP 6.5.1ckt is around 6 Megs. Download the .zip. If you have a previous version of PGP installed, you should copy your keyrings to another folder or to a floppy disk, uninstall it, and reboot your system. Run the install program for PGP 6.5.1ckt. If you already have keyrings the install program will ask if you want to use them. Normally you should say Yes. All the defaults should be okay unless you have a particular reason for changing them.

Until next newsletter.....
