I'm sending this to several of you with whom I have been discussing PGP.
Last time I sent you a message about PGP, I was using PGP 6.0.2ckt.
Prior to yesterday (1/12/2000) I was running 6.0.2ckt build 05.
Yesterday morning, I upgraded to build 07. As promised in the readme
file, the 07 build fixes the problem with Outlook Express 5 integration.
This was never a serious problem, because there have always been other
easy ways to use PGP with OE5.
Having just installed PGP 6.0.2ckt build 07, I located and downloaded
PGP Desktop Security 6.5.2 . This is NOT an international or CKT build.
I also did not see any mention of freeware or shareware, if you know
what I mean. I was initially reluctant to give up the CKT extensions.
The CKT versions support large keys and also let you change the ID
string that PGP stamps into all PGP coded blocks (encrypted, signed, or
keys). However, I decided to give it a try.
Whenever uninstalling or upgrading any version of PGP, it is prudent to
backup all of your keyring files, even though PGP normally leaves them
intact through upgrades. The exact location of the keyrings varies a
bit according to the version of PGP. For 6.0.x the location is
"C:\Program Files\Network Associates\PGP60\PGP Keyrings". For 6.5.x it
is "C:\Program Files\Network Associates\PGP\PGP Keyrings". When I
installed the 6.0.2ckt07 build, I followed the directions in the readme
file, which suggested that after running the uninstall on any older
version you have installed, you should reboot, then manually delete
C:\Windows\pgp*.* and C:\Windows\System\pgp*.* . When I decided to try
the 6.5.2 version, I followed the same procedure.
PGP 6.5.2 bundles PGPnet (for VPN use) and PGPdisk (for encrypted
virtual disk partitions). It does not include PGPfone, but neither does
any 6.0.x version. (PGPfone can be downloaded separately at Imad's PGP
Page.) The system tray icon has been changed, as has the menu it pops
up. The notable new item is PGPnet, which did not appear in any 6.0.x version. I have not yet tried to test PGPnet. The only missing menu
option (with respect to 6.0.2ckt) is the ability to change the ID
string. It identifies itself simply as "PGP 6.5.2".
Of course, 6.5.2 does not support the CKT extended key sizes. It
supports RSA keys up to 2048, and DH/DSS keys up to 4096/1024. It
supports CAST, IDEA, and TripleDES algorithms for symmetric encryption,
and lets you specify your preference.
Although I will miss the CKT features, they are more fluff than truly
useful. The ID string does not affect operation at all. And while it
is nice to be able to use the long keys, they do not theoretically add
much if any to real security. Also, if you use long keys you sacrifice
compatibility with other PGP versions.
All things considered, I have decided to stay with PGP 6.5.2 for now.
If a 6.5.2ckt version becomes available, I will probably switch to that
version. If I come across a new version or new information, I'll let
you know.
If you want to try PGP 6.5.2, I found it at

_Security_6_5_2.zip . I suggest using a real FTP client rather than a
browser. I first tried with IE5 in conjunction with GoZilla, and while
the transfer started, I was unable to complete it or resume it. I later
succeeded using CuteFTP.
